                                                                                                            June 24th 1863.

Dear Brother
As it is now more than a week ago since I have written to you, I think a letter at this time wont come amiss. I would have written to you before this but it is almost impossible to send a letter off. We have no regular time for the mails to leave and as to receiving a mail that is almost out of the question We have had no mail since the Sunday before last and would not have rec’d that one if it had not been brought from Winchester by the Sutler. as it is there has been over a weeks mail kept from us I expect when it comes to have a pretty good pile as I have rec’d but two since we crossed the river /

Now for something about Front Royal

Having received permission to cross the river I started down the R.R. towards the town. We found Shields Division getting ready to move down the R.R. towards Manassis. they were a pretty hard looking set though that is not to be wondered at for they have had a hard time of it since they left Bank’s Division at New Market. I was talking to one of them and he told me that they had been but two days at Frediricksburg before they were ordered back. I seen

I seen old Perry Schindel at the Camp of the 110th Pa he has been with the Regt since it came out as Chaplain. The old Fellow look as well as ever but he says he has lost thirty pounds in his weight. I think that hasnt hurt him any./

Front Royal has been a very pretty place but it has seen hard times from the Soldiers of both parties the houses are almost all deserted and but the soldiers have put them to good use by taking them for their quarters

We are still encamped in the same old place. the third Brigade is encamped about 1 1/2 mile from us. Gen’s Banks & Williams have their head quarters at Middletown * miles from us Sigels Division (it is reported) lays within supporting distance of either Fremont at Strasburg or the force at this point nothing more at present Give my love to Mother Sisters & Brothers & receive the same Yourself from your aff Brother
