In the Field Army of Potomac
                                                                                    April 3. 1865

Bro. Abram.
The few moment which I have to day I sit to pen you a few lines The booming and roar of cannon is constantly heard during the entire day all last night I could not sleep but little The firy shells could be seen exploding in the sky and the whole heavens at a distance were red with the glare of the terrible battl which is now going on.

Troops are rapidly marching to the field. Thousands of tens of thousands of wounded are coming to us from the battl field. I have several hundred under my care now

We lie out in the field about 6 miles from Petersburg and not more than 20 from Richmond the Rebel Capitol. Fighting is going on terribly all day. The news is good. our loss heavy. many Rebels wounded come to us.

Mr Saml. Gower of Scotland is here to see Mr Shuey of Va who is at the field Hospt. He said you got a Substitute if you did you may be glad /

did you get one? if you did let me know. If you could see what I see the soldiers cut and shot to pieces you may be satisfied to stay at home. Summer is here. the trees are out in leaves and the peach and other trees are out in bloom. It is warm today we have as warm weather here as the latter part of April at home A long train of wounded is coming so I must stop. Good bye. Be sure and write me. be very careful in the directions don’t make one mistake or I cant get the letter
