Friend Emma
I now take this oppertunity to write you a few lines to let you know that i am still abouve ground & hopeing those few lines will find you all enjoying good health. It is so long since i heard from you that i can not trace back to the date. But as you have so mutch to contend with i consider it my duty to excuse you hopeing better hereafter. We are a garding the orange and Alaxandria railroad. Our duty is very heavy but is mutch better than to be on the move constancely after the enemy / as some of our comrads are at the present time. as for me duty is prefeble to marching As there is nothing new i will bring my letter to a close so good give my best
