                                                                                                                        Jan. 10th 1863
 
Dear Mother I just recieved your letter to night was glad to hear from you I have got all the letters and I think all the pappers you have sent I got the dollar and was glad of it Mr Cook thinks he has got all the letters his wife writen and I think he has answered most of if not all of them I should think that we had been in som big Battles from what I hear from Vermont but I have not seen eny rebs yet and I / dont we shal just yet. their was some of Stuarts Cavelry broke through the lines but we did not get Chance at them they did not come to fight but to get imformation and suplies but did not get much of either. Mrs Cook said in her letter that Mr Gordon told her that we had been in a battle but I dont believe he knows much about it dont worey yourself about our geting in to eny fite just yet for their is no rebs near here now it began to rain to day about one oclock and rains yet and is geting mudy if it rains long it will be so that no army can march unles it should freese up again it has been first rate wheeling here all the time their a little snow fell last night just to mak the ground white but it all went of before noon I wish you would send a papper that has some news in it for we do not get the news here till it all worn out the Battle Ten. was good one for our side it makes Vt boys feel good to hear of such a fight as that the 12th Regt. is about one mile from here they are encamped in a fine place I dont care if y send a smal box of stuf if you send eny thing send some butter and Chease and tell Mr Benton he may let you have a little maple sugar if he has it to spare dont put in a great lot of pies and cakes for they are not worth much we do not get much sugar and we can not buy it as it costs 20 cents / per pound send some dried beries Mr Cook says tell Mrs Cook to put in some Chease butter and sugar and some worm wood and she will know what elce if Mrs Benton wants to send some thing to her Brothers I will see that they get it as soon as it comes I seen them last sunday they was here dont get a very large box I dont think of eny more so I will stop writing and go to bed good night
