                                                                                                Alexandria Dec 5th 1862
 
Dear Parents we have got back to Camp Vermont once more we was gone about 8 days Camped out all the time had good wether left Post near Union mills yesterday at 2 oclock AM took a long march for thanksgiveing eat our super of pork and hard bread in the woods then started again arived here at one oclock this morning making a march of 28 28 miles in 11 hours it was bright moon light and to day it rains so I am glad that we came through last night we have been most on to the Bull Run Battle ground some of the men came in on the cars because they had so sore feet / our Col. told us when we started that we could not keep the Governers day but he would apoint one when we got in to Camp some of the boys had stuf sent to them from home but a gooddeal of it was spoiled before it got here I think that it does not pay to send home for dainties when we are better of without them we can buy Cheas for 14 cents per pound sugar 11 to 15 sweet potatoes 20 cents a peck and that is all we want butter is 32 to 37 and poor at that we doe not buy it we have not been payd of yet and doe know when we shal be some of us are geting rather short of money but we / get along without as well now as ever I was glad of the blood root you sent for I took cold last week but am geting better I wrote to you last sunday from union Mills I forgot to tell you that it was my birth day we had a grand time while we was gone saw a great deal that we shal never forget their is thousands of log houses all the way from Union Mills towards Bull Run as far as we went and as much farther as we could see some of the boys went up to the battle ground they say it is a terible looking place you know their has been two battles their I think their was a battle at Centreville yesterday as we / a great deal of heavy fireing there it is only five miles from whare we were encamped their was 6 N.Y. and Penn. Regiments Came out to relieve us it was a blunder that sent us out the 13-14-15- all went out and I supose that they will all come soon I guess that I wont rite eny more as I doe not think of eny thing
