                                                                                                Union Mills Apr 3rd 1863
 
Dear Parents I recieved your letter yesterday and was glad to hear from home again I took a bad cold the day after we came here it was very warm and I helped the Capt put fix the ground for his tent I had not done eny shoveling for long while and I worked pretty hard for about an hour but was not tired at all but the next day I was lame all over and had the worst cold that I have had since I left home the next day snowed and rained so that it was uncomfortabable in / tent so I went to the convalesent Hospital and stopt 2 days I came out yesterday my cold is better now and I have got so that I can eat pretty well I went over to the 16th this fore noon and found Frank Long I knew him when 20 rods of I did not know before that he was there he is a Corpl he said he came out here to see the Country more than eny thing elce their is a picket guard goes out from this Regt. one day and the 16th the next I think it takes 150 men or more for the pick line it is warm here to day we have drill fore noon and after noon now when it is fair weather /
 
we have lost our 2ond Lut. he was promoted last night to go into Co. B as fires first Lut. I dont know who will fill his place but we shal have one before long I was sory to hear of the deth of David and Aunt Susie their is not much news afloat here now I can hear the news boy comeing he yells out Baltimore clil Cliper American and Washington Cronical another great Battle 2500 in Kentucky 500 rebels killed I wont write eny more unles I get a letter to day when the mail comes /
 
Sat Apr. 5 4th
we have got another Lut. he was the first Sergt of Co B it is cold and windy this morning so we have no drill this fore noon the ground frose one or 2 inches last night it is said to be a very late spring here march was as hard a month as we have had we have an old stove in our tent that the boys foraged one night the box you sent came in good time but I have not been able to eat much of the stuf yet but I guess I can get rid of it now before long I am on duty to day for the first since last Monday I put on my straps last night and went out at dress prade I had not been out since last Sunday have you sold the oxen yet or are you going to keep them this summer I wont write any more now so good by from your affectionate son
