                                                                                                Union Mills Va June 4th
 
Dear Parents I recieved your letter of the 31st to day and will try and answer it you say you got the picture how do you like it it would have been better if the sun had not shone in our faces so we could have held our eyes open the one I got had Col Veseys horse in it but before we could get another he led him of but we all got the old Chesnut tree you wanted to know who they all were calling myself no. one No. 2 is M. V. Chadwick Co. C northfield no 3 C F Persons / Co. D East Topsham no 4 F. D. Nason F. D. Nason Co E in the rear rank the man behind me is Albert L. Harris Co K Co K st johnsbury that young fellow who holds the State Colors is H. S. Young also of Co K Co K St johnsbury the Sargent is from Co. C Northfield and so is the big fellow by his side and their is one more who was sick so that he could not go we would like to had them all standing in line of battle could as they would not take /
 
we drill 2 hours each day one in the morning one at 5 PM the rest of the day we have to our sef selfs sometimes we go down to Beatton on the cars I went the other day the next day the rebs fired on the train and drove the guard of and burnt it the Cavelry were there in lees than half an hour draw the rebs took their gun and killed some of them the Vt Cavelry lost one man the N. Y. Cavelry 3 their was none of our boys hurt for they all run as fast as their legs could cary them Lut. Hartshorn was in coman Command as the / guard their was 25 or 30 of them I am glad none of the Color guard were that day but the next day 4 of them went and came back all right I had a letter from Ellen Souther a short time since one from Martha westgate one from Nancy Nancy day before yesterday we have not been payed yet and I dont know as we shall bee but that is the report we have all sorts of Camp stories but no one is scared by them their is no more so I will so stop good afternoon from your affectionate son
