Francis M. Guernsey to Frances E. Doty, 22 June 1862
Berlin June 22nd/62
Dear Fanny
I have just a few moments to spare to day which I will improve by writing to you. as it is already quite late, you will pardon me if I write a short letter won’t you. I received your very welcome letter yesterday and was supprised to learn of the death of Mr Saselle. from my short acquaintance with him I thought him a very fine young man. I presume his loss will be felt by his numerous friends in W_ but thus it is with life we dont know what / a day or an hour may bring forth. so Fanny it is wise in in us to be prepared to meet our summons whenever it is sent. it makes but little difference when we are called away if we are onley prepared to go, and this life is composed of such checkered scenes of good and evil, joys and sorrows. but alas how much more of sorrows than joys of evil than good enter into and compose the majority of our lives.
Fanny I dont know but I shall be obliged to give up my intended visit the fourth. there is not much probability now of my being able to get away for so long a time. if I could come up and get back home in two days I presume I could get away but that would be onley an agrevation. There is / no one in the office now but the Judge and myself and one of us have to be there most of the time. I guess that there will be nothing done here the fourth after all. it appears to have all fallen through, but Fanny it is getting quite late, so that I must close. tell Sarah that I am much obliged for her P. S. and onley wish it had been longer. good by please write soon & believe me
Your friend
Frank M. G.
