Francis M. Guernsey to Frances E. Doty, 29 June 1862

Dear Fanny
Your welcome letter came to hand last week and I have commenced an answer although I shall not promise that it will prove very interesting for the weather is so very warm that I have no ambition or in other words I am pretty much played out. I went to church this morning and listened to a very good sermon, but came very near dissolving from the heat before the meeting was out. we are being blest with very favorable weather at present which causes the farmers face to assume a cheerfull aspect. it realy makes one feel good to see how happy & good natured / they appear.

I had a very pleasant time last evening. a party of us went over the river to a rotary swing which has just been erected. it is turned by two men with levers and so constructed that it can be made to go very fast or slow as suits the pleasure. the proprietor charges five cents for fifty revolutions, but before we had gone one half that number I had to have the machine stoped and get out it made me so sick the rest of the party remained in the swing and laughed at me for being so easily affected. I had no desire to answer them for I was to sick so the swing was put in motion again. they had not made many revolutions before some of the others became sick and by the time they got out of the swing they / were a sick looking crowd I tell you. it then came my turn to joke them. we all finally thought we would quit even, and went home fully satisfied with the evenings entertainment. I dont think they will get me into another such a scrape again.

The fourth will probably be passed in Berlin the same as any other day they have given up having a celebration here, and many are going to Waupun so that it will be dull enough, but it makes no difference to me I shall probably stay in the office and let the fourth celebrate itself. I should like to have come to Weyauwega very much indeed, but you know Fannie that when we cant do as we would we must do as we can. I know I should have had a very pleasant time. I should enjoy hearing that singing very much. you must sing my favorite / song once in a while Fannie so that you will not forget it. I hear music so seldom that it would be a great treat to hear you and Sarah sing once more I have forgoten nearley all I ever knew about music my guitar has been broken and when I try to sing alone it sounds so much like filing saws that I get disgusted and invariably stop after the first firs verse is murdered, so you see there is not much enjoyment in that. but I will not weary your patience any longer this time so good by. please write soon and a good long letter, and believe me your friend
