Francis M. Guernsey to Frances E. Doty, 14 September 1862
Berlin Sept 14th/62
Dear Fannie
This is the sabbath day and the last day of my stay in Berlin. our company has finaly recieved orders to go into camp at Oskosh. we are to starte to-morrow morning on the Boat. we are going to have a splendid flag presented to us before we starte it cost Seventy five dollars is made of blue silk for a ground work, in the left centre is the state coat of arms & in the right is the name of the Company (the Truesdell Rangers) in large gilt letters. Also the motto “The Constitution and the enforcement of the Laws” it is the most beautiful flag that / I ever saw and we feel very proud of it.
Fanny I wrote you some time since and have received no answer I have been afraid that perhaps you might be sick, but I hope that is not the case. I sent to your address that Guitar & a book. did they reach you safely the box was not locked for the reason tht it could not be locked but I tied it up with strings the best I could and sent it on. if it reaches you, you will find some extra strings in the little box in the neck of Guitar box I suppose that by the time I get home from the war you will be able to play an accompanament to some of those songs you and Sarah sing so beautifully
I dont know Fanny whether / I shall be able to get a furlough after I get to camp or not I think though that the prospect is very good and I assure you that if I can I shall come to W— without delay. Oh! Fannie how did you get home from Waupaca I was lonesom as a dog all the next day & have been ever since but it cant be helped. you know that a soldier must put up with every thing that comes along without murmur or complaint.
Fanny I have got quite a number of letters to write to day so you will excuse me for not writing a longer note. Now Fannie please write soon for I want to hear from you awful bad. good by be a good girl and may God bless & protect you is the prayer of
Frank
P S My respects to all your people. I may visit you again in a week or two
