Francis M. Guernsey to Frances E. Doty, 28 September 1862
Camp Bragg Sept 28th

Dear Fannie
Your very kind and welcome letter was recieved and read with much pleasure. it is the onley letter I have recieved since I have been in camp. I suppose the reason is that I have written onley one since I have been here. I have been so busy that what little time I have had to myself I have not felt like writing to any one. I have had all the Muster & Pay rolls of the Company to make out. I was not obliged to do it but the Captain thinks that I am his right Bower and if there is any thing hard to be done he depends upon me to do it. but after this I am going to let those do it whose / duty it is. they have got it to learn and they might as well learn it first as last. you would be supprised to see the amount of writing that is required in a company.
Fanny I am among the luckey ones thus far. I have got a first rate office my duties are light and easily performed I like it well so far. I suppose though that it will be some different when I get in the field but then if I dont like it I can resign and go into the ranks. We were Mustered in and partley paid last week. some of the boys refused to be mustered in and were sent to the Guard house and kept on bread and water which soon brought them to terms. Our Regiment has recieved their arms and part of their clothing we shall probably get the rest this week then we shall be ready / for the field. we have a splendid Regiment and one that will make their mark if they ever get into an action some of the boys are getting impatient to get into the field but we are not yet well enough drilled to accomplish much. there is a possibillity of our Regiment being sent north to fight the Indians we dont much like the idea but are willing to serve our country in any position that we are placed
Fanny I wish you could be here a few days just to see the elephant & see how we soldiers live I presume you would not fancy our stile very much. we have a greate many visitors every day. but it is getting late & I must close. I am in hopes to be able to get a furlough the latter part of this week if I do you can guess where / I shall go. so good by please write soon. love to all & believe me as ever your friend

PS. Fannie please excuse this pensil writing. I have to write on a board & a pen is not very handy
