In Camp near Falmouth Va Jan. 12th 1863
To Hon. E. M. Stanton, Secratary of War.
Sir. This is to respectfully represent that I now hold, and have held since the organization of the Regiment the rank of senior Captain in the 15th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, and that in consequence of various causes, among which, are, First, the promotion of an Officer my Junior, to the rank of Major, which I am entitled to by seniority, Who has lately applied for his discharge on a Surgeon’s Certificate of disibility.
Second, / While I was a prisoner of War, on my “parole of Honor” the said Officer, with nine other Line Officers all my Juniors, Caused to be published in the local paper of my County an article requesting me to resign as I was of no benifit to the Regiment, thereby creating an unjust predjudice against me.
Therefore I cannot, consistantly with a proper sense of dignity and self respect, submit to these wrongs, and serve the Government with that zeal which is essential to success, consequently and in the most respectfully manner I tender this my resignation, and ask an honorable discharge from the service of the United States.
I have the honor to be Your Most
Obedient Servant
