                                                                                                Camp Oliver Dec 17 1862
 
                                                                                                Good morning Mr J. D.
since I wrote last I have journeyed south some 1100 or more to the land of cotton we are encamped at Camp Oliver about a mile and a half from Memphis Tenn we left Camp Dennison the 8th and arrived at Memphis the 12th we drawed our guns the next day
 
last night I stood picket guard one of the guards was shot by a secesh the ball struck him in the right Shoulder inflicting a severe flesh wound
 
we had a gay old time coming down the river the boys were shooting ducks and geese all the time the river was black with them all the time this morning we were cald out and drawed 60 rounds of catriges yesterday we went out target shooting / we made the woods rind I tell you
 
we expect to moveon Vicks Burg within a few days there is about 90 thousand men encamped here now we expect to have a hard battle there they say the Rebels have about 250 guns planted along the road at Vicksburg
our regiment is the resurve of the army so you see we stand achance to come out all right
 
Mr Atkins has just come in he is well there the drum is sounding for drill and I must go so good by
