May 8th 1863
Dear Father and Mother
I receaved a letter from you today I am well dr and having a nice rest we have not marched any for 2 or 3 days we are about 4 miles from Black river I suppose we are going to take the railroad bridg on the road bettween VB and Jackson there is about 10,000 rebs there 3 of the rebel pickets left there post today and came to us they say the rebs talk of evacuating Vicksburg I hope they will but I guess they will have a nice time getting away for we are most all the way round them
we have one of the best men for a general I ever saw his name is Oyster House he is a dutchman he was with Segal for a long time he is a gay and festive old fellow it maks all the / boys laugh to hear him give his orders the other day after the battle he came across one of the rebel colonels that he took prisoner when he was with segal and the colonel began to sauce general Oysterhouse when he drew his revolver and shot him through the heart I think he done just rite dont you
I have not had any letters from aunt Laurie how many has she wrote to me you had not better send me any more papers for I dont hardly get time to read them and the other boys get papers so I hear the newse I said there was none of the boys hert that you knew but there was Mr Woss was slightly wounded there is no news so I will quit write as soon as you get this and oblige your son Newell J Fuller /

I will not do by you as you did by me but will write a few lines to you I have seen some hard times lately but we are haveing a nice rest now I suppose we will have to march in a day or to though I shall be glad when my time is up then I shant have to carry my cloths and bed on my back we have to carry 90 rounds of ammunition and 5 days raitions we captured a teem to carry our knapsacks but they would not lett us have them it if I had any way to carry them I could get any amount of the best kind of books I cant think of any more so good by write soon Newell J Fuller

I will write a few lines to you how do you get along now days does Lorenzo Warner come to see you / very often is you and Mrs Perkins as good friends as you uset to be has your little dog come home yet how does the cats get along now since there is no one to plague them you must be a good girl and I wil come home and bring you a stick of candy

P S you said I had better draw some cloths I drawed a pair of pants and then throwed away my old ones I cant carry any more than I have to about the pay some of the boys in our company did not draw cloths enough to come to the 42 dollars and when they were payed off they payed them the rest that was coming to them so I shall run the risk of getting it
