June 8 1863
 
                                                                                                Dear Father and Mother
I seat my self to write a few lines to you to let you know that I am alive and well you may think it strange me writing agane so soon but I thought you would not care how often you heard from me we are having alittle rest now for a few days we have been relieved by Hoveys division all of our division except the 42 have gon back to black river and I expect that we will go in a day or two they are expecting Jo Johnson in with reinforcements for the rebs they would have surrendered the town long ago if it had been for that now / suppose they will hold out as long as they have any thing to eat and according to all accounts that cant be long a prisoner that came over the other night said they got quarter raitions of corn and pees ground togather and a little fresh beef without any salt he he said that all the publick buildings wer full of sick and wounded and that our shell are killing and wounding hundreds of them evry day
 
the report was that there was to be a general bombardment of the town to commense this afternoon and last 24 hours but I dont see as there is any more firing this afternon than usual if they do open all of our artillery and gunboats on them they will / begin to wake up we are planting some 64 pounders today them are the boys that can speak when they are called on
 
I have not told you what happened to my knapsack a spell ago one morning we were expecting to have a fight with the rebs and were ordered to go as litely equiped as possible and so we all left our knapsacks all I say I mean all of our company and company B and left a man to guard them we marched on about 16 miles and stoped for the night we stayed here two days and when we started on we sent two men to bring up the things they went back got a teem and got the things all on and started for the regiment they got to within of about 4 miles / of where the regiment was when some secesh cavalry dashed in and got men knapsacks and all I lost evry thing but my rubber blanket that I took with me the morning we left
