June 15 1863
Dear Father and Mother and Sister
I received a letter from you last night was glad to here that you were all well
I am well as usual we are still laying in the reer of Vicksburg and are likely to lay here for a spell our sharp shooters and artillery keep at work evry day we are not loosing many now you wanted to know if I was in all of the battles I was in all but 2 them were at raymond and Jackson at champion hills our company was out as skirmishers and did not get into the fight till late in the afternoon the bullets flew thick when we did get in at Black River our company / was out skermishing agane we were under the worst kind of a artillery fire but none of us wer hurt
when we came to Vicksburg we were in the advance and made a charge the first day we went there I cannot discribe the battle to you with pen and paper but I hope I shall soon be where I can talk with you the report is that the drafted men are to report in camp Dennison the 6 of July I hope it is so
Wheeler is not very well now but will probbly be well agane in a few days Mr Atkinson and Fosket are both well as usual Captain Jewit is not with the company he is sick and has ben evry since we were at Perkinses plantation / we all think a great deel of him our first Lieutenant was wounded at thompsons hills so we have but one commissioned officer with us you we are in the 13 army corpse comanded by McLernerd we are in the 9 division commanded by Oysterhouse I did not tell you that I see Bill Haley aspell ago I did not see John warner but bill said he was well I se Ed Beach and that fool boy that went for duston they said that Wormstich did not stand it very well I cant think of any more to write
