Camp Sanders June 4
Dear Father and Mother
I received a letter from you and now will try and answer it. I am well as usual Henry is well enough to work agane all of the rest of the boys are well James Warner is in camp hearding cattle the rest of the boys that you mentioned are at home you wanted to know if Alph Stevens had paid me that dollar he did not and I wish that you would ask him for it the next time that you see him I will tell you another little thing that he did when he took command of that company of Negroes there was three or four of the negroes that had some money and they gave it to Alph for safe keeping and when he left he took it with him so you can se what kind of a man he is /
I have got a blanket and have had one a long time I drawed it from the quartermaster when I heard Jake Hale and Len Warner was drafted I threw my hat into the air and shouted as loud as I could I hope they will both of them have to go and never return
it has rained for a day or two back and it is getting quite muddy in the woods we have been making bridges and fixing the roads the gurillies are playing smash around here. they fell thre or fore of the large trees acros the island shoot to blocade the river if they dont clear out we will give them fits or some thing else
us fellows that enlisted with Alph Stevens have got to stay six months I beleave Alph sold us after he got us down here he would stand a poor chance if the boys got hold of him I’ll bet if we all get home safe / some of the boys will thrash him after I stay here till the first of next month I am going to try and be transfered to the raftsmans they get $60 a month that will pay pretty well and they dont have to work verry hard
give my respects to Angie and tell her I hope she will get well of her sore throat I guess that you must be mistakened about mr Stranahan seeing a letter from me give my respects to all of the young folks there in the neighborhood tell Hat and Fanny that I am going to write to them some day when I get time I cant think of any more so good by
