Camp Hodge August 6th/64
Dear Father Mother and Sister
I received your letter of July 31st last night was glad to hear you was well. I am well as usual I have quit cooking and now am at work in the sawmill I dont have to work verry hard in the mill now you need not be afraid of me getting sick for that aint my name I dont think that the boys will need them papers that Alph sent down Alph dont like to have the truth told does he I am glad it makes him squirm
our bos come back to day with 40 men and is going back to get more before long
the rebs scart the Nigs all most to death to day they fired on some of our pickets and drove them in / camp they did not happen to kill any of them they took the boss of the raftsmen and took his hors and some other things away from him and let him come back to camp a squad went out from camp to look for them but could not find them I guess they will not truble us any more about coming home when my 4 months are out I can get my discharge any time I want and I think I will stay as long as I like it and then take my discharge and come home I am getting $45 per month and I cant make more money here than any where else I cant think of any more
