Dear Father Mother and Sister
I received a letter from you last tuesday and one today I was glad to hear you wer all well I am well as usual I am at the mill to work yet you wanted to know what I do at the mill I set over the log and saw slabs with a circle saw some days we saw 8,000 ft of lumber you thought that I would like cooking better than loding logs it was easy work but it kep me to clost to suit me I had rather work hard and be done some time than to have easy work and be at it from day light till dark I am glad Brunswick has filled her quota but if I had been drafted / I should have gon if they had come after me

you say it seams so long since you heard me fiddle I will hear enough of it when I get home agane I would like to be at home where I could rest a little and have something good to eat but there is no use of thinking of any thing like that it only makes me mad we have plenty of mellons peaches and apples to eat now

there was quite an excitement here in camp yestarday one of the foremen of a gang of negroes got killed he was out a mile or two from camp with an other man when they got into a fuss with some citizens there was a lieutenant of the cavalry pasing and the citizens called him to stop / the fuss he came up and ordered Ferrel to quit and Ferrel stoped and rode up and put his arm around the lieutenants neck just then the gurt of ferrels saddle broke and let him fall and he rolled the Lieutenant off with him and they both fell to the ground when they wer getting up the lieutenant drawed his revolver and shot Ferrel through the heart Ferrel was drunk and I dont think that he had any intention of hurting the lieutenant he was a good man otherways and all felt bad about his being killed they have not done any thing with the lieutenant yet and I dont know wheather they will or not I think he ought to be hung but they dont think of getting / into a fuss here without using a knife or pistole so evry one must look out for himself

I got a letter from Mat Fuller the other day with her photograph in it
