William H. Stiles to Thomas J. Berry, 12 January 1863
Camp of Lawtons Brigade
near Port Royal Va
Jany 12th 1863
Dear Sir
Enclosed I forward you your commission as Lt. Colonel of the 60th Regt Ga Vols. It was received by me some time since & I desired to have transmitted it to you at a much earlier date, but was told by Dr Banks who had first returned to the Brigade from Middleburg that no communication could be sure of safe transmission to you on account of the enemy who had overrun the country & it was not until I visited Richmond a few days ago to take my wounded son Henry there that I learned that you had passed “thro” that city on your way home. I have heard no particulars of your health for some time but trust you are improving. I hope you will write & let me know how you are. The Regiment suffered pretty severely in the late battle of Fredricksburg but they are said to have acquitted themselves with honor. We are now on the banks of the Rappahanock awaiting the movement of the enemy who are still across the river. We shall probably remain in this neighborhood during the winter. Your friends among the officers are all well. As you have perhaps seen in the papers Capt Farris & my son Henry were very seriously wounded. Keller & Lt Hagin received severe but not dangerous wounds Capt Howard & Lt McGee were slightly wounded.
Your friend truly
Lt. Col Thos. J. Berry William H Stiles
