My Dear Jennie:
This being Sunday I will devote a few moments in penning a letter to you. On yesterday I was in expectation of a letter from you, but unluckily I was disappointed. nevertheless I suppose it will be on hand tomorrow afternoon. Notwithstanding it may I will still write this to day and if the one arrives tomorrow why of course I will immediately answer as usual for it is my determination in full to be punctual and regular in my correspondence with you. Good health is as yet my fortune, and I am getting along admirably well. Duty has been pretty severe for the past 15 days, on account of the great excitement, but that has been lulled to sleep, now all is quiet and duty will become easier. And we have so far enjoyed the excitement and no doubt will enjoy the quietude likewise— /

The weather is daily growing colder & old winter is fast coming on. We do not care, for here we are all snugly quartered fm the storms & snows. that is if the “rebs” do not come in too large a force and drive us out. We are better situated this fall than ever we have been since in service and also in better spirits. We have but one more year or so to wild away and then we will be clear for our term. Many there are will gladly welcome the long looked for time when the 12th will have been discharged. And on your account I hope the day may speedily arrive and I be permitted to return safe to my home and there enjoy the pleasure of the company of my own dear friend.

            My Love to Lue
& my best respects to your
Mother Aunt & Sam Confer
And also to any others y who may inquire about me /
And last but not least my undivided and constant Love to you in truth
While I sign myself yours & yours alone while life
remains—

                        Yours
                                    John H. Black
