Richard A. Bachia to Jonathan Sproul, 16 February 1863
                                                                                    Brooklyn E.D. Feby 16, 1863

My dear Sir
It gives me much pleasure to bear witness to your uniformly good conduct while with company “C” Eighty Seventh Regt N.Y. V. where you acted in the capacity of second Sergeant, orderly Sergt & acting Lieut. & during much of the time for the last three months before the consolidation of the regiment with the 40th you officiated as commandant of the company & I must say, with credit to yourself & to my satisfaction. You were with your company & the regiment through all the battles & other duties in which we were engaged during the ardous campaign on the Peninsula.

Had the regiment not been consolidated, you would have received merited promotion as I had nominated you to Govr Morgan & sent in your name with others to Army head quarters, in compliance with orders therefrom, for reward for gallant & meritorious conduct on the field.

You have the requisite knowledge & ability I should judge, to hold the position of a commissioned officer & I sincerely trust your patriotism and unflinching devotion to the cause, may be thus rewarded.

                                                                        Yours truly /
                                                                        R. A. Rachia
                                                                                    Lieut Col lately commanding
                                                                                                late 87th Regt N.Y.V.
