                                                                                                Wheeling May 14—61
 
Dear John.—yours of the 14 ult came safe to hand—I am here now attending the Convention as a delegate from M.C. & had you been here yesterday & heard the thrilling speeches. But you will learn from the inteligencer more than I can now communicate—We do not know when this Convention may get through with the buisness before it.
 
I succeeded in getting a check on the Bank of Mo. which I enclose, for $17 00 I paid yesterday $1.00 in advance for your inteligencer & I enclose 10 cents in Stamps in full $18.10 /
 
I also enclose a receipt which I wish you to sign & return as soon as possible—you perceive the receipt is dated so as to correspond with the date of my settlement of the estate
 
We are all well, and parker arived home on last Sunday in good health. this has been a backward spring here, not through planting yet, great excitement here, we no not what a day may bring forth—we Western Virginians go for a Seperation of the State, God grant that we succeed
 
            My love to all—I write in haste May the god of our Fathers preserve us
