Mr. Frost.
Yesterday afternoon I received a letter from John Mix stating that through Mr. Kingsbury he had ascertained that my fourth bounty check had not been paid and that I could get another but as I could not find the Capt. last night I saw him and got / one this morning, and hasten to forward it to you, and request that you will endeavor to get it in ahead of the rascal that stole my other and thus secure the money whereas if he should get ahead of you you can not draw it. I hope this may reach you in due time and that you may be successfull in obtaining the money. the weather here is very sultry hot and has been ever since this month came in the first day of the month was very hot and it seems as though it grew hotter and hotter evry day. here I sit writing nothing on the upper portion of my body except one of the cotton shirts you sent me and still I am sweating by the quart almost but despite the weather we have to work evry day diging on fortifications except the day we come on guard and / the day following guard duty we are excused on account of having been broke of our rest the night before. a days work diging here is four and one half (4 1/2) hours that is two and one-half in the morning and two in the afternoon. I recd. the four dollars you sent me. after getting this check cashed please purchase and forward to me one dollars worth of stamps and send me the balance of the money and
