Dear Brother
I have just recd the Nick-nax & Tribune you sent me. I have been expecting letters from home for the last 10 days but have not received any since the 18th. I have written 6 or 8 letters during the last two weeks and have received no answer not even to the letters that I sent with Mr Emmanuel I cant se how it comes all the rest of the boys have received letters since then while I havent had any

We are now encamped about a mile and a half from Harrisonburg on the road leading to Gordonsville / On Friday morning last while encamped 3 miles on the other side of Harrisonburg we received orders to move on to this place so we started and passed through town about 12 Oclock and marched about 4 or 5 miles on this side where we halted for the night. on Saturday morning Company G of our Regt was sent on picket about two miles from Camp. They were attacked by Ashby’s Cavalry in the afternoon at 3 Oclock and had a slight skirmish in which one man was killed and 3 men wounded as soon as the firing was heard in Camp our Regt was formed and went to support our pickets but though we went on a double quick we didnt get a chance to fire a shot for just as we / got in sight Co G fired a volley at them when they turned and made tracks for a woods about half a mile distant two Cannons that came up with us fired a few rounds after them when they cleared out entirely. there was 7 Companies of them. Our Cavalry went out on Sunday and captured two of the Rebels and they stated that twelve of their men was killed the day before by our Cannon.

On Sunday morning we were ordered to fall back to this point as it was supposed that Jackson was reinforced some say that Donelly who was in command of our Brigade took us farther than he was ordered, as it was not intended that we should / go so far. Brig. Gen Ferry is to take command of this Brigade. He used to be Colonel of the 3rd Corps

I have nothing more to write at present but will write tomorrow perhaps

I wish you would write a little oftener as it is rather discouraging to write and not receive any answer

Give my love to Mother
Brothers & Sisters & receive the
same yourself from your
            aff Brother
