Camp near Warrenton Va
July 14th/62
Dear Brother
You will no doubdt be surprised at receiving no letters from me for the last few weeks the reason of that is because we have been almost constantly on the move We were up Luray Valley on a reconnoisance then returned to camp at Front Royal where we stopped for a few days then we received orders to pack up for a march we expected to to go up the valley but were surprised when we took the road leading to Warrenton. We marched about 22 miles and halted for two or three days waiting for the rest of our division and part of Sigel’s to come up the whole force then / marched to this place where we are at present encamped. during all this time we had no mail excepting once or twice.
We had a pretty good time of it in our travels. we did not marched very hard on account of the heat we marched early in the morning and then stopped in the woods until evening when we would march a few miles further we were always encamped at places where we could get plenty of cherrys, Blackberries & nw Potatoes. we had a few good messes of chicken and new Potatoes. Yesterday our Company was on picket for the first time in a great while our dinner consisted of 4 chickens and a youn hog weighing 75 pounds that was pretty good for our post I don’t know how the mess / on the other posts made out but I guess they did not starve
We are now only 36 miles from Washington. the reason we were brought here I suppose is because most of the troops that were here have been snt to reinforce MacClellan. The force now here consists of two Brigades of McDowell Bank’s force and 2 Brigades of Sigel’s We are nearer civilization now than we have been for a great while.
Morning papers reaches us by 4 O’clock in the afternoon
nothing more at present
Give my love to Mother Sisters & Brothers, to all inquiring Friends & receive the same
yourself from your aff Bro
Dan. Davis
