July 23rd/62
Dear Brother.
As this is the first oppertunity I have had in a great while I avail myself of it to write to let you know that I am well. The last letter I wrote to you was dated at Warrenton I had hardly finished that letter before orders came for our Regt & the 28th N.Y. to draw 10 days rations & be ready to march by 6 O’clock that evening we had struck tents and were on our way towards this place We marched 12 miles that night and 12 the next day, encamping for the night within 6 miles of Culpepper. The next morning / (Wednesday) we marched through town and encamped on the South side about a mile from town
the boys thought to have a good time of it in staying here until the rest of the troops would come up but in this we were mistaken for the next morning we were ordered to advance with the Cavalry and Artillery towards Madison C. H a distance of 20 miles. We marched 17 miles and then halted as the road was in too bad a condition to allow our wagons to follow us the wagons did not come up until the next morning and as the mules needed rest we halted there for one day while the Cavalry went on to scout the Country towards Gordonsville / they advanced to within 8 miles of Gordonsville and found that there was a strong force at that point and that they were advancing towards us. having found out all that we came out for we were ordered to fall back on Sigel. We took a mountain road and after marching 25 miles reached his lines. from there we were ordered to march to Culpepper a distance of 7 miles. So here we are again at our starting point after having traveled for 1 day in succession at an average rate of 14 miles a day and having been in 5 or 6 different Counties but it is hardly worth my while to write more about it as I seen the correspondent of the Philadelphia Inquirer along with us. you will get his account / before this reaches you
no more at present
