Camp near Fairfax Station Dec 21st 1862
Dear Brother
I received your very welcome letter yesterday morning also the package of tobacco. I expected to have had a good bunch of letters & papers by the mail as we had not received any for 10 days during which time we had been on the march. We are now encamped in a large pine grove and have a middling warm place of it but not as comfortable a place as we had on the Heights. we have not yet commenced building quarters as there is talk of our Division going to Martinsburg or Harpers Ferry during the coming week. if we do not go there I think we will stay here as it is not probable there will be anything more done this winter. People at home talk a good deal of a winter campaign but if they were here to see the roads that the Army has to move on they would alter their story.
Charley Snyder was up yesterday from Alexandria to see us. he looks first rate and gave me a great account of his escape from Bristow Station last fall
In your letter I found the P. stamps & shinplasters they come very good though I dont know whether I can pass the shinplasters or not.
The Tobacco just came in good time as we hadnt as much as a single chew in the Company
Give my love to Mother & Sisters & Brothers to all inquiring Friends & receive the same yourself from your aff Bro
Dan
