            Dear Bro
I received your welcome letter yesterday and was very glad to hear from you. You write of the poor Christmas you had spent but if you were with us you would have had a worse one with but little prospect of having a better day tomorrow (New Year’s).

We had quite a time here lately Our Corps was ordered to go on a recconoisance towards Dumfries Geary’s Div was in the advance our Brigade had got but 5 miles from Camp when the news was brought to us / that the Rebels were in our Camp playing the duece with the commissary stores & burning the tents. Our Regt and the 10th Maine were ordered back & found the Rebs were not in the Camps but they were pretty close to the Station they crossed the Rail Road about four miles below our Camp and I suppose they went on towards Leesburgh You will be told by the papers that the Government has made all preperations to capture them but that is all talk

We were mustered in today for two months pay this makes 6 months pay due us from the Government and I think it is pretty near time for them to pay us some of it /

no more news to give you at present

Give my love to Mother Sisters & Brothers to all inquiring Friends and receive the same
from your aff Bro
                                    Dan
