Daniel Davis to Henry Davis, 13 January 1863
Camp near Fairfax Station
Jan 13th 1863
Dear Bro
I received your welcome letter on Saturday last and now take the pleasure of answering it. I would have answered on Sunday but I happened to be detailed for picket, so I had to leave it until now. with your letter I received two papers (Zoar Press) one of them was of a very early date (Dec 12th) and was directed to Md Heights how it could have got here after being delayed so long is more than I can tell We have had a great time lately. in front of our Camp is an open plain about two miles in length & one in width. every day this plain is covered with troops drilling by Companies, Battalions & Divisions. The boys dont like this drilling very much as they think there is no use in working without pay.
I notice a great many visitors lately coming to visit their friends in the Corps they seem to like to see the different Brigades out on drill, as I notice a great many of them on the Parade ground every morning we would like to have a visit from the Man that carries the “Greenbacks / as it is a long time since we seen the Color of one of them.
nothing more at present
Give my love to Mother, Sisters & Brothers, & receive the same yourself
from your aff. Bro
Dan
