Daniel Davis to David Davis, 31 May 1863
Camp Parole
Annapolis. Md. May 31st 1863

Dear Bro Dave
I take this oppertunity of writing to you once more though you have not yet answered my last letter. I have received your answer to the letter I wrote to Mother and would have answered immediately but I was expecting another from you with some money in it and now I have come to the conclusion that you did not receive my letter or that the money (if you sent any) was lost. You need not send any now as we were paid on Friday we needed it bad enough for what we had when captured was spent in Richmond for Bread and when we came here we were dirty & ragged with a few of Secesh Greybacks to make us scratch / we are pretty well off now as we have drawn some new clothes and bought shirts & etc.

the boys are sporting themselves around greatly we have the privilege of going to the City every day as long as we behave ourselves I have been to town but twice. I went yesterday to buy some shirts and little trifles, having lost every thing with my knapsack today I went to the Catholic Church with Cramsie.

I see some few E. churches in the town but none appeared to be open except an Episcopal If we stop until next Sunday I intend to see the inside of it too

I have been thinking of getting home to see you all. I cant get a furlough from here as there is none given. I think the only way is to get a citizens suit put on a bold face and go on the cars. there are a couple of dozen going every day most of them go on foot but / that is a poor plan as the cavalry pick them up fast If we are not exchanged pretty soon I intend to try it on

I will write to you befor I try it.

I was in town yesterday and happened to meet with a young fellow of the 95th that I knew and he was quartered in the same street with us in Camp Parole. he was dressed in citizens clothes and was going to his home in Philadelphia so we (Cramsie & I) talked to him as if he was a young man returning home after a visit to us (his friends) at the depot we shook hands with him telling him to be sure and come to visit us soon again and bring some of our friends with him. we kept up the sham pretty well and had the satisfaction of seeing him safe on the cars and off                   nothing more

Give my love to Mother, Sisters & Brothers

to all inquiring Friends & receive the same yourself
                        from your aff Bro
                                                Daniel Davis
