Dear Bro Dave
I take this oppertunity to write to you to let you know how we are getting along We reached this City on Saturday last and since then have been quartered in the Zollicoffer building so called from the fact of its having been built by the Rebel General of that. It was originally intended for a Hotel but is now used as a Barracks for Soldiers passing through the City to and from their Regiments the building is five stories high and has three-hundred and sixty five (365) rooms it was here that so many of the Rebels were killed by the floor giving way about a month ago. /
There is not enough transportation here to take us all to our Regiments at once so we have to wait our turn. those of the 2nd Division of our Corps left today. we may leave tomorrow or we may have to wait until the 11th Corps goes. they are not in such a hurry to send our Division as the rest as our Regts are guarding the line of railroad. the 46th is about 10 miles from here.
There is a great deal of business done in this City, a great deal more than I expected to see. I have walked around and seen the Stores well stocked with Goods Theatres & Playhouses in full operation and Citizens coming and going by hundreds, so that if it wasnt for the Hospitals & Army War houses a person might almost think there was no war going on
There is one thing I dont like to see and that is so many Officers walking / around apparently without any business I thought it was bad enough around Washington & Baltimore but it is worse here.
I haven’t any thing more to write from this place so I will close
Give my love to Mother, Sisters & Bro’s to all inquiring Friends
and receive same yourself
from your aff Bro
Daniel Davis
