Dear Brother
I have just received a letter from you I am very glad to hear that you were all well you seem to think that I have forgotten you but I have not. you see the reason I did not write sooner was this. I received about half a page of writing from you the other day and I was waiting anxiously for the rest of the letter. I received a letter from Dave the same time that I received yours but as I wrote to him the other day I must wait for news before I can / answer this one. Tell him that I have viewed the “Register” & “Standerd”. I havent seen Charley Russell yet. He is Captain of a Cavelry Company and is attached to the 39th Illinois Vol He is now in Cumberland with his company. We expected to see him at Williamsport but he had started for Hancock before we got there. then we expected to find him here but were again disappointed as he had started for Cumberland just the day before we got here, but we expect to see him before long. this is the most miserable town we have been in yet, except perhaps that Darned town down at Muddy branch If it wasnt for one thing it would be very dull here / and that is because of the soldiers. the whole Brigade has been paid off. the 40th was ahead of them in all getting paid as we were paid on Tuesday last the 5th Conn on Wednesday & the New York Regt yesterday

Our Captain started for home yesterday to see his sister who was very sick and was not expected to live. perhaps you will see him. It was pretty hard for him to get a furlough as we are expecting marching orders every day

I sent some money and a short note to Mother but had no time to write as the Captain was in a hurry to go, having but 48 hours time to go to Bethelem and return We expect him back tomorrow (Tuesday) night /
no more at present

Give my love to Mother
Sisters & Brothers to all
inquiring friends
& Receive the same yourself
from your affectionate Brother
                        Daniel Davis

P.S. Now dont waste so much paper when you answer this if you cant fill the paper any other way make pictures on it that will do as well D. Davis
