Daniel Davis to Sister, 27 February 1862
Camp Wilson Feb 27th
Dear Sister
I received your welcome letter this morning and was very glad to hear that you were all well. We are all getting along much better since we moved out to Camp than we were while in town. I wrote to Dave yesterday and gave him an account of our visit to Bath and also of the celebration of Washington’s Birthday in Hancock Bath is a very pretty little place It is a summer resort of the Virginians and takes its name from the bathing places which abound in it. There was but 2 or 3 men in town and those were too old to be of any / service to the Rebels or else I suppose they would have to go and join the secesh army We did not stay there long enough to find out much about the place but seen the ruins of a Catholic Church which the Rebels had burnt besides a great many empty houses, the inmates of them having to cross over into Maryland to save their lives. being Union men, we did not see a single Rebel soldier while marching on the sacred soil of Virginia, though we seen where they had been and left their mark behind them
We are expecting orders to march every day. We have had orders to prepare for a 2 days march 3 times since / we have been in this place and this morning we thought we were sure to be off but the order was again countermanded so that now we dont know when or where we will go perhaps we will stay here for two or three weeks yet and we might be on the road in an hour from now
I must now close my letter for the present as it is almost time for the mail to start
Give my love to Mother
Sisters, Brothers, to all
inquiring Friends, and
receive the same yourself
from your affectionate Bro
Daniel
