Dear Brother
I received your welcome letter on Friday morning I suppose you sent the large envilope to make up for the size of the letter paper at any rate you managed to fill the paper for once even if it was small. The Captain said when he gave me the letter that he thought it was a letter from Gen McClellan giving me the appointment of Brigadier Genaral. You will know by my letters to Mother & Dave of our marches from Camp Wilson to this place. While we were in / Martinsburg I went around to see the Locomotives that the Secesh had burnt last summer. there was about 35 or 40 of them. such destruction I never seen before. Engines & Cars all huddled together and burnt. Rails all taken up and sent of to Winchester, that is all that were of any use We seen wheels and Rails all along the Road from Martinsburg to Bunker Hill I seen a great many shinplasters in Martinsburg most of them were on the Corporation of Winchester. they were valued from 5 cents to 1$ You ought to see the citizens run after Uncle Sams money though you could get as much goods for 5 cents of / our money as you could for 10 cents in shinplasters. I would send you one of them for a curiosity, but the fact is I havent any thing to buy them with We were mustered for pay on the 28th of Febuary and expected to get our pay before crossing the river but now I dont expect any pay before April or May and by that time we expect to be on the road home Lieut Thomas left us in Martinsburg for home I didnt have any chance to talk to him before he left as I was out in field pitching our tents. You will see him before this reaches you. /

The boys as well as myself are all well. Morg is writing home. he was on Camp Guard yesterday so that will account for his not writing when Jno Davis and the rest of us wrote yesterday if it would not be an inconvenience to you when you write again send a sheet of paper so that I can answer with it as we cant get any paper here handy I gues that will do this time

Give my love to my Mother Brothers, Sisters & Friends
and receive the same yourself

            from your aff ate Bro
