Daniel Davis to Brother, 15 April 1862
Camp near Woodstock Va
April 15th,
Dear Brother
I suppose by this time Mr Emmanuel & Bill Thomas have got home and you have heard everything of interest from here but as we dont know when we will be off I thought I might as well write you a few lines to let you know that we are all well. We had orders yesterday afternoon to be ready to march at a moments notice so we packed knapsacks and waited until 9 Oclock for the order to move but no order came. Gen Rosencrans is reported to have reached Woodstock yesterday. I hear it rumored that he is to take Banks place but I only put that down / as Camp talk. We had a great time here when we received the news of the recent Union victories. There was a salute fired. the Bands played the Soldiers cheered and such a noise I never heard before.
Morgan & Bill left here on Friday last. The Old Man would like to have staid with us over Sunday but Bill was in a great hurry to get off. If a person that was not acquainted with Bill was to hear him talk he would have thought that the Furnaces had stopped because Bill was not there to see after them. It is a wonder to me that they / got along so well while he was out with us. The Old Man stopped in our tent while he was here and seemed to be well pleased with everything although I guess the bed was rather too hard for him He told us a great many stories about home and I suppose he will tell you something about us but perhaps he may forget to tell you that we are pretty bad off for P. O. stamps so I had better tell you myself no more at present
from your aff Brother
Daniel Davis
Give my love to all the Family
