Daniel Davis to Sibling, 5 September 1862
Camp near Tenallytown D.C
Sept 5th
Your are (no doubt) wondering why I have not written to you before this and will be more surprised to find that I am again on this side of the Potomac.
I have no time at present to give you all the particulars of our doings for the past three weeks but when we get settled down in Camp I will write and give you an idea how things are going on in the Army. Since we left Culpepper (19 days ago) we have not stopped 18 hours in the same place but have always on the move / Banks Corp formed the reserve on the Rappahanock We were moved up and down the river for 11 miles first to spport one wing then brought back to support the centre then sent to support some other point I thought that if this was the work of the reserve I for one would rather be in front.
this was kept up for 10 days when another retreat was was ordered this time to Manassas our Corp moved down the Rail Road guarding a train 3 miles in length. We staid along the road to Manases for a week when the Army had to fall back once more so the train was burnt and we moved down to the fortifications in front of Washington /
Yesterday we moved across the river to this place. how long we will stay here I do not know but I think we will move farther up the river before we stop to en Camp D.D.
I seen Charlie Snyder on Saturday last. he was on the train that we were guarding. I also seen John McClellan yesterday as we were passing through Tenallytown. he looks hearty I will write a longer letter as soon as we get to Camp
Give my love to Mother & Sisters & Brothers & receive the same yourself from
Your aff Bro
Dan
