Camp of the 46th P.V
Maryland Heights Oct. 10th
Dear Brother
Your letter of the 30th came to hand last evening I can’t see how it was delayed so long on the way as it should come through in two days at the farthest. Philadelphia papers come through in seven hours, so I should think that letters might come as quick You write about Sam coming to Alexandria to see me. Charlie Snyder told me about that at Bristow Station Joe & I went over to Bolivar Heights day before yesterday to see McClellan & Hutchinson in the 53rd and Morgan Jenkins in the 13 [ink blot] we found the boys well and in first rate spirits /
McClellan received a letter a few day ago from Job Davis. Job is in a Hospital at Norfolk he says he is not getting any better
About 10 of the Paroled Prisoners returned to Camp yesterday Amongst them was Billy McMonagle John Patrick, John Abbott, Ed Haber & Ed Troxell of Co. C. Troxell was taken at Winchester
the rest of the boys are at Alexandria and will be along in a few days they all seem to like the idea of getting back to the Regt again and all have some big sories to tell of their treatment by the Rebs Billy for one is very glad that he is out of their clutches and says he dont want to go back there again /
The Paymaster is to be here in a few days to pay us off we are all very glad to hear it as the hard times of the past two months in the eating here made us come down in pocket. even where we are it is pretty hard to get enough of anything fit to eat. this is the fault of the Quartermaster
My hand is getting along first rate only there is some proud flesh on it. I have had it burned three times with Costic so I think it will soon come round all right
Give my love to my Mother Sisters & Brothers & receive the same yourself from
your aff Bro
