Camp of the 46th P.V
Maryland Heights Oct. 31st
Dear Brother
I received your very welcome letter this morning and was very glad to hear that you were all well. I was very sorry to hear that Aunty was so sick but I hope that she will soon get better.
You will see by the Papers that the grand “Army of the Potomac” is again on (darn the blot) and you will doubtless think they took the 46th with them but I am thinking they will advance without us this time it seems so at least for during the last three days the roads have been covered with troops going towards the Ferrys & crossing into Virginia We have had no orders to leave but on the contrary we have to send a great many men to picket the river towards Sharpsburg. Lt Col Selfridge & Charley McCarty started today for Harrisburg this looks a little like staying here dont it Our Division is all scattered around doing guard duty. the 5th Camp is at Fredirick. 10th Maine is at Berlin. 28th N.Y. doing Provost duty in Pleasant Valley. 46th & 128th P.V. Picketing along Potomac
these regts belong to the 1st Brigade /
the 3rd Brigade left here yesterday for Sharpsburg they are to guard the river from that place to Williamsport. the object in guarding the river after the Army has advanced into Va is to keep Citizens from crossing with goods & to keep them from corresponding with Rebels. Gen Williams I hear has been appointed Military Commander of the Rail Road & Telegraph at his Post. So you see from these things I take it that we will not be moved from here and I hope we wont
nothing more to write
Give my love to Mother, Sisters, and Brothers to all inquiring Friends &
