Daniel Davis to Brother, 18 December 1862
Camp Mathews Dec 18
Dear Brother
I received your letter in due time and was glad to hear that you were well. I wrote to Henry yesterday and gave him particular fits for writing such short letters to me. We are now under marching orders & had expected to be on our way long before this At 6 Oclock in the morning our cooks received orders to cook 3 days rations and the men were ordered to pack their knapsacks ready to march at a moments notice. But after waiting a long while I believe the order has been countermanded for to day at least /
We had a duece of a time packing our knapsacks this morning on account of having so many things sent to us from home, but we made out pretty well. I dont suppose that we will go far from here or stay long away either. We are not going to take our tents with us but leave them stand where they are and leave those soldiers that are not able to stand the march to do guard duty. I cant make out where we are going some say to Williamsport others say to Harpers Ferry and some like myself say nothing. I would like to go to Harpers Ferry very much.
D.D
I have no time to write anything more at present because Morg is going to town and perhaps I wont have another chance to send this off
