Dear Cousins
It was with pleasure that I received your kind letter last Evening after comeing off of a small March we had yesterday. My health is good and I am happy to hear that yours are the same under circumstances. The Weather is quite changeable some days being very warm and some quite cold but every thing goes off quite Pleasant.
I have not heard from home in some time but expect to receive a letter soon /
We left Baton Rouge October 29th for this place 23 miles below Baton Rouge by Water. there was one Company of the 156th N.Y. Comp H of the 128th N.Y and Comp I of the 38th Mass Vol. One Com of Wisconsin Cavalry and a section of the 18th NY Battery all under the command of Maj Bache of the 31st Mass Vol. We expectted an attact on this place for the last week and went at it and throwed up a small Earth Work suficient to Protect our Small Force. the 21st we Received Reinforcements from Brashear City of Genl Grants Old army. they are the following Regiments as far as I know their names are the 22ond & 47th Kentucky One Ohio Battery and One Illinois Battery /
Yesterday our Small Force under Command of Maj Bache went out to a place called Indian Village some 10 miles west of this place. the Cavalry crossed the Bayou and chased the Rebs some six miles back but did not capture any of them.
the Road was quite muddy but we came back in little more than two hours time. very good marching for the state of the roads.
We dont fear a great deal of an attact here now.
I will now write you the names of our Commanders and then close We are in Franklins Divishion, O. P. Goodings Brigade, Col. Jacob Sharpe Regiment, Lieut. Wm J Purdys Company, Capt Coolie has bin lately appointed to our Comp in place Capt Donaldson Deceased. /
