My Dear Wife
Before you receive this I may be in Richmond it seemes that I been kept here all this time in close confinement simply to ask me to take the Oath allegience I cant tell what it is dont know its Requirements—but not satisfied with that the next is to sign an instrument over one foot long called a bond what is its penalty I cant tell as I never read it I informed the officer that I was willing to take the Oath (Parole) that I had allready taken but it seemes that no Virginian can bee trusted under Oath without bond that would involve him self family & probably neighbors If thare was any guarantee that I should not be interfered with I then might take it but the same unprincipal fellow who has caused my arrest can or could cause it again & then the penalty of the bond required—If I was to take one million of oaths administered by St Paul him self I could not be more true to them than I was to my Parole that I took in March 62 in bidding you adieu I now feel that I just returned from the toomb or cast my last fond & lingering look on you my fond partner of life & four sweet Babes but alass I can do no better I must leave you in the hands of a just God who will shield you from harm & provide for you. you had better send to Mr W— & have P. I disposed of to the best advantage I think you had better dispose of some of the stock however you must be the best judge—all the prisnors or nearly so are compelled to leave their all and go South against their will & wishes /
