Orlando Roads to William Roads, 3 October 1864
Monday City Point Oct the 3th-/64
 
                                    Dear Brother
I received yours of the 28th was glad to hear from you and the rest of the folks as it is the first that I have heard from that old native home
                                                                                                                                 
   Bill we are Incamped on the Point at Grants Head quarters his office is about 100 roods from our tent his Armey is about 7 miles from hear at Petersburgh that is his front they are having a hard Battle up to the front now it last Friday and is still goin on we can hear the fireing from hear Some of the big guns makes more noyz than thunder and lightning I was down to the dock last / night there was 13 car lodes of wounded soldiers they wer from the front they wounded last friday it was the worst site ever I saw I helped unload them some with legs off some with arms off and feet fingers and shot threw the chest head legs and bodey they was a mangled up mess but they was a grity set they had to take the gun away from one fellow his arme was shot off he wanted to stay on the Battle field and fight the Johneys they had to force him away we have gained some ground there but you will get the news in the Paper before this gets there the Johneys are coming in hear every day Sunday there there was over 1000 came in some was prisoners and some was diserters /
 
Bill we are under marching orders and have been some time we expect every to be called to the front we are all ready to go when they say go all rite Bulter is across the River the river empties into the James river betwene Richmond and City Point you can look on the map and see where we are we have got in a pleasant Place and good water Bulter is Pulling off some big guns to night he is toward Richmond it is about 10 miles from hear but enough about the war for this time Suffise it to know that we are all in good spirits ready to fight when they say fight Bill I have a run colery morbus it has left me prety weak though I am a getting better fast I have been off from duty 1 day onley /
 
well bill your letter has done me all sorts of good but I should of liked it better to get one from Lote you know I am very much obliged for the things you sent me and the news from Lote and Eugene and our folks I am glad to hear that Mother is as well as she is I hope she will get well but there is not much chance tell her that if I was there I would help take care of her I would do all I could for her I am not sorry I done what I did tord taken care of her if I never see her agin she has my best wishes. my respects to her and all of the rest tell the girls to be good Father and mother tell them to write to me I will write as often as I can when you write write all of the news write what butter and cheese I guess unkle Sam makes it to sell we have not had enny yet no more at preasant from your ever true Brother
