Alexandria Sept the 30 1862
 
Out on picket in the woods right in the pine brush pleasantley situated in a little brush hut now for what we eat well we have poark potatoes Corn Aplesause and Coffey shugar bread and all things in general I tell you Nila it makes us all feal tip top to get out on picket and now I will try and tell you some thing a bout picketing well in the first place we pack our great Coat and rubber blanket then we get our poark and bread then we fall in to line 2 ranks and start for the woods we march 4 ranks on the road when we get about 9 milds then we begin to leave sometimes 10 some times 5 or 4 or 8 or 15 or 3 / and so on till theare is some 70-80 men of us string alonge the same as it would be to stashion them from your fathers to Wm Demings about as near to gather as from fathers to whear we use to live then if we on the advance can fall back to the rear gard and then give them fits you know I have written to father Crittenden and I spose that it was mailed yesterday I got a line from henrey last Sunday he was well and smart Thomas taylor is well and Peter Baker has got well owr Co are in good health at present we had 1 man caught a sleep on his post and lost his gun last night but we know whear the gun is we shall go home to night or back to Camp /

back in camp we came back last night and wer well cucerd with dust while I am now writing Newton hathaway and Dwight Tucker are hear they say that henrey hathaway and clay and Jim Lad wer wounded in the fight in Maryland henrey and clay wer wounded in the legs Lad in the arm all slight I cant write much more kiss them Children give my love to all        all well

since I closed this letter I thought that I heard last night that the 37 Regiment had left Arlington hights and gon to maryland but whear I do not know
