Alexandria Oct the 2 1862
Dear Venila I received your letter and picture to day and you dont know how much good it did me to see you once again and to hear that you wer all well at home and I thank god that I can say the same of my self at present I am engoying first rate health down hear and I dont think the times so hard or the fare so bad as one might think from what you thought by E M H writing I have had the same fare that he has except that he has ben sick once or twise a weak since we came into Camp but he had not ought / he never was tough aneough to stand Camp life but if I write like that you will think that it is harder than it is I am getting fat I was weighed the other day and I weighed 143 pounds and had on no vest or Coat you wished to know if I did not want some stockings I dont think that I do I have got one them Cotton stockins that you knitt for me and have got 3 or 4 pair in my knap sack so I dont think that I nead aney nor Mittens you know that I had a good pair of gloves and I have them now and it is not so cold down hear as it is in windsor while I am writing now the sweat is dropping down on the / paper so you may not think that it is cold torey had a fitt when we wer out on battalion drill this after noon the rest of the boys are well I believe and I hope by the goodness of god our heavenley father that we shall all be spaird to return to our homes but if he has otherwise decreed I must submit and say thy will not mine be dun I can read my testament and call on him in my tent every day and try to sing but that goes hard tell Malona that she does not know how much I prise that testament that she gave / me and tell her that thank her every day when I take it out and set me down and read the precious promises that I find thare in I hope you all will hold fast in the faith where with Christ has made you free now prey for me and I will remember you all at the throne of grace all though I am far from you the same god reigns hear as thare kiss them Children and tell Clanie that he must not cut him with his new knife and tell Nettie that father is glad to hear that she is a good girl she must keep her locket good so that I can se it when I get home
