Alexandria Oct the 5 1862
 
Dear Nila I now take my pen in hand to let you know that I have not forgoten you nor my dear Children I am thankfull that I have ben spaird till the present time and that I again se the light of another sabath morning but it dont seam like the Sabaths that we yuse to have at home but I did not expect it so I am not disapointed in the least but I can read my testament and can call uppon god though I am far from home and those that I love but god can hear prayer down hear and I am glad for now I think that my plea will be heard /
 
this is the first Sabath that I have spent in Camp but what we have had to doe duetey in Camp or go out on picket to day we had general in spection of arms and knapsacks I did not have one word said to me a bout gun or knapsack or aney thing else so I think that I must have passed all right I am well and tough as I ever was and I hope that this will find you and the Children engoying the same great blessings and we ought to fall thankful that we are spaired to engoy health though we are not permitted to engoy each others sosiety not but I hope that we shall soon meet again your picture oh how much / good it does me to loock at it and I have got Janes that she sent to me and one she sent to E M Hubbard he is well now all the rest of the boys are all well we had a little axident in our Co but not in our tent thear was a felow by the name of Morgan that was Cleaning his gun and did not know that it was loaded and it went of the ball went through his left hand close to his fingers it splinterd some of his bones so that the Doctors picked out some of them but you need not wory a bout me for I dont Clean me gun till I know that it is not loaded and so you know thear is no Danger from that /
 
the Whitman boys wer very shure that they could stand it as longe as aney one but they think that they have very hard times down hear but I think that it is not so bad as it might be I get enough to eat except tobaco and I can get a longe with that you know I shall try to be contented and trust in god we got a letter from father and Mother the other day they said that they wer all well father hubbard I mean I spose that you have got home before this time I want you to write all about the gardens and how you get alonge I must close now kiss the Children tell them to be good Children
