My Dear wife I now take my pen in hand to write you a few lines to let you know that god still spairs my life while others are called to pass through the valey and the shadow of death two day I had to asist in burrying one of my tent mates his name was Warren Reed he had ben sick some 6 or 8 weacks and was very poor their was 8 of us that went as escort to the grave we marched at reverse arms and fired 3 voleys after the Coffin was let down into the grave and that is the last of our fellow soldier in this earth but I hope that I shall meet him in / heaven whear thear will be no war nor battle sound but all is peace and love I have had a number of talks with reed and have read the testament to him and have prayed for him but I feel as though I not half done my deutey to him but I ask god to for give me and I will try by the grace of god asisting me to do my dutey better after this I fear that Hamlin Ford is running down he grows poor all the time and seams to have no ambition but I hope that he will get over this the whittman boys ar better so they have both ben on dutey to day Erastus Hubbard health is the best that it has ben since he came into / Camp and I hope that he will continue so for he is so down hearted when he is not well my health is the best that I ever engoyed I am as fat as a hog and tough as a knot and I hope that you and the little ones those Dear little ones how I should like a good kiss all round but you must kiss them for me and they must kiss you for me tell them that their father has not forgotten them and I hope they will not forget me nor to ask god to spair me to cum home to them you wrote a bout sending me a chickin I dont think that you had better send aney thing till I send to you I wrote to you / to you for some stamps I shall probaley get them before you get this if not pleas send them as soon as you can for I cand get aney hear and I want to write some 2 or 3 letters a weak I got a letter from A J Babbitt last sunday and I am loocking for one from you every day I must close now
