My Dear an. Venila I now take my pen in hand to write you a few lines to let you know that I am still alive and well I got your letter in due season and was glad to hear that you wer all well and getting along as well as you are I have not mutch to write we have all got 2 pairs of white cotton gloves that we have got to wear on inspection and reviews and Dress perade and we are to have 1 pair of them clean in our knapsack all the time the Colonel says that this is the moddel Reg and he says that we can Drill the best of aney regiment / that he ever see our guns shine like a silver spoon and he says that they have got to be kept just so bright thear has ben 3 deaths in our Co yesterday I had to help lay out one Calvin Nobles his brother died dide in the hospital hear just 10 days before he was called to his long home they we both of them hard boys and when spoken to a bout swearing whitc whitch I did a number of times the answer that I got was an oath or it is none of your business forgive them oh forgive I preyd and that was all that I could doe my health has ben good all the time and I hope yours has ben the same /
 
thear has ben a big battle going on near freadricksburg for some 2 or 3 day but how it will end we have not learnt that is not oficialey it is thought that burnside well whip them but if he gets whiped probaley we shall reinforse him but cant tell I will answer your questions a bout Neadham he is from Clinton mass and is a nice felow and a bout my best friend or most intimate friend I can hardley tell you that that is between Jacob Martin and neadham Billey dolan is a good friend of mine and thear is Adrian Adams is my friend I must close and go to the funeral
