Preston Pond Jr. to Mason Hoot, 14 August 1862
August 14th 1862
Dear Sir;
I am at the end of Mr Monteganders lane, ten & half miles from Port Hudson. This is the only point at which I can procure water for men & horses; this is near enough at the present moment, as the battery and troops can be thrown forward in time to meet any requisition. I did not leave the saw mill until about 6 a.m. the baggage waggons not having come up until that time. the enemy did not honor us with the expected visit. I will meet you in town in the morning. If you desire the battery moved nearer for the present communicate orders to me,
To Capt [?] Mason Hoot very truly yours
A.A.Gen Preston Pond Jr
