                                    Dear Niece                                                      I was very pleased To receive a few lines from you in Brotheres letter dated June the 1st I was peased to har that yo wer atending school and I thot you intendid to take music lessones for nothing ilike beter than good music I hope you will atend diligantley to your studis for I hope to hear that my litle niece has becom an complished lady I hope to hear you play those peaces that you spoke of lerning for I thing they are first rat the star spagle baner espeiley I hope that it may son wave again over our land I see by your letter that you have not for got to play with your doll yet I would like to be in ould Ithaca a short time to help pick those straw beryes &c how dos that litle sister get a long you did not mencion her I hope you love her for if you dont I shall / sould you when I come back if you dont take good care of little Cary Perhapes you would like to know what I am doing at presant we are Icamped on James river I thinke it is the peasantist place that I have seen as yet I thinke we shall probiley stay here some time at lest I hope so I dont thinke you would know me now if you was to see me I have Taned up till iam all most as black as a negro I am almost a fraid be out a lone for fear that some one will clame me for a contriband and then you would not like it I ntendid to make you a visett but failed to get a furlough The war department will not grant eney more furlowes at presant pease excuse my poor atempt In hast Give my love your father and mother and Kiss litle Cary for me and rite often if you dont I shall scould if you dont
